NICO Holdings, Sanlam send journalist to SA

Malawi Stock Exchange- listed NICO Holdings and Sanlam have sponsored a Malawi Broadcasting journalist to a one-week financial journalism training in South Africa.

Speaking at the send-off cocktail in Blantyre on Thursday,  the journalist Aston Gondwe, said the training would equip him with skills that would help shape the public broadcaster’s news reporting.

“I am positive that the training in financial reporting will help us as a public broadcaster in the way we package our articles”

NICO Holdings corporate Services Manager Mbumba Mlia-Ndasauka said the company, in partnership with Sanlam, has been sending journalists to the school for the past three years.

“In the past first year we sent two journalists from print media, last year we sent one from radio and this year we are sending one from television.

“It is training that has been ongoing and we want to make it annual,” said Mlia-Ndasauka.

Mlia-Ndasauka said with most companies producing annual statements, it would be best for financial journalists to interpret the statements better and inform the public on companies’ performance.

This is the third year the two institutions have been sponsoring journalists to enhance their capacity in financial reporting.
