NICO Group has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities in Malawi by donating MK400 million to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) through the Ministry of Finance. The donation will help address the severe hunger crisis affecting many districts across the country.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, NICO Group Board Chairman emphasized that the contribution reflects the Group’s unwavering commitment to stand with Malawians during this critical period of food insecurity. The donation follows a call for support by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, after declaring a State of Disaster.
“Food scarcity is not just a humanitarian issue; it is a developmental impediment. When families struggle to put food on the table, education is disrupted, health outcomes worsen, and productivity declines,” said the Chairman.
The MK400 million donation, mobilized from NICO Group subsidiaries, will be implemented in partnership with World Vision Malawi, ensuring that maize distribution reaches communities identified by DoDMA.
NICO Group commended the Government of Malawi for its leadership in coordinating disaster response efforts and creating an enabling environment for private sector participation. The Group also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the government, development partners, and communities to build a resilient Malawi that can withstand future shocks and achieve the aspirations outlined in Malawi 2063.
The Group further commends its colleagues in the private sector who have already come forward with substantial support and appeals to more institutions to respond to the plight of vulnerable Malawians.
“Let this moment serve not only as a response to the crisis but as a symbol of unity, shared purpose, and the power of collaboration,” the Chairman concluded.
